Description
This course will examine the evolving law of professional and amateur sports, including the influence of sports on American law, culture, and history. Class discussion will emphasize contemporary legal issues unique to sports as they happen, including due process, sports broadcasting, trademarks and publicity rights, unionization of athletes, free speech and expression, discrimination, and injuries on and off the field of play. Topics will also include commissioner authority, antitrust, drugs, sports violence, disabled athletes, Title IX, civil rights, politics and protest (such as the Olympics, Muhammad Ali, and Colin Kaepernick), business (Michael Jordan, sports agents, sports apparel, sports leagues, fantasy sports), amateurism (NCAA), and sociology (Jesse Owens, Jackie Robinson, Brown v.
