Professor Hablutzel taught courses in corporations, securities regulation, banking law, international capital markets, trusts, jurisprudence, trademarks and international commercial arbitration. From 1985 until 1996, he was the founder and Director of the Graduate Program in Financial Services Law. He holds a bachelor's degree in Political Science from Louisiana State University and master's and law degrees from the University of Chicago. He spent three years studying philosophy and law at the University of Heidelberg, Germany. Before joining the IIT Chicago-Kent faculty in 1971, he served four years as a research attorney with the American Bar Foundation.
Professor Hablutzel was the project leader and draftsperson for the Model Residential Landlord-Tenant Code, published in 1969. In 1972, it became the Uniform Residential Landlord and Tenant Act, now adopted in 21 states and several cities, including Chicago and Evanston. He is also a co-author of the Model Business Corporation Act Annotated (3 vols.) (1971). His book, International Banking Law (2 vols.) was published in 1994.
From 1979 to 1983, Professor Hablutzel was the first president of the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. From 1984 to 1988, he served as reporter for the revision of the Illinois Not-For-Profit Corporation Act. He was a member of the Secretary of State's Corporation Acts Advisory Committee from 1986 until 2005, when it transformed into the Institute of Illinois Business Law, now located at Chicago-Kent with Professor Hablutzel as its director. He was chair of the ABA Subcommittee on Adoption of the Uniform Trade Secrets Act (1984-86); chair of the Section of Commercial, Banking and Bankruptcy Law of the Illinois State Bar Association (1993-94); chair of the Corporation Law Committee of the Chicago Bar Association (1988-89); and chair of the Illinois State Bar Association's Section of Corporation, Securities and Business Law (2009-10).
During the fall of 1992, Professor Hablutzel taught in England as part of the London Law Consortium. He was a Senior Fulbright Professor at the University of Mainz, Germany, for the spring and summer of 1993. He has taught shorter courses in Buenos Aires, Madrid, Augsburg, Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Bangkok. Since 2004, he has been a public member of the Business Conduct Committee of the Chicago Board Options Exchange. This committee serves as the disciplinary body for the three exchanges of the CBOE: options, futures, and high-speed trading.
For over 35 years, Professor Hablutzel has been the Faculty Sponsor for Chicago-Kent's Annual Conference on Not-For-Profit Organizations. The 38th Annual Conference was held on June 13, 2019 and the 39th is planned for June, 2020.
