Author and labor law scholar Julius G. Getman to discuss "Making the Right to Organize Real" at IIT Chicago-Kent September 28
Julius G. Getman, the Earl E. Sheffield Regents Chair Professor of Law at the University of Texas at Austin School of Law, will speak at IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law, addressing the topic "Making the Right to Organize Real." Professor Getman's lecture will focus on issues explored in his book Restoring the Power of Unions: It Takes a Movement (Yale University Press 2010).
The lecture, which is sponsored by Chicago-Kent's Institute for Law and the Workplace, is free and open to all. The program will begin at noon September 28 in Chicago-Kent's Governor Richard B. Ogilvie Auditorium, 565 West Adams St. (between Clinton and Jefferson streets) in Chicago. The program will also be webcast live. A reception and booksigning will follow Professor Getman's lecture.
Professor Getman is a preeminent scholar in the field of labor law, where he pioneered empirical studies and continues to do extensive field work. Prior to joining the faculty at University of Texas at Austin School of Law, he served as the William K. Townsend Professor of Law at Yale Law School. Professor Getman has also taught at Stanford Law School, University of Chicago Law School, and Georgetown University Law Center.
Professor Getman is the author of The Betrayal of Local 14: Paperworkers, Politics and Permanent Replacements (Cornell University Press 1998) and In the Company of Scholars: The Struggle for the Soul of Higher Education (University of Texas Press 1992), and co-author of both Union Representation Elections: Law and Reality (Russell Sage Foundation 1976) and Labor Relations: The Basic Processes, Law and Practice (Foundation Press 1988). He has also co-edited a book of essays (with former Labor Secretary Ray Marshall), The Future of Labor Unions: Organized Labor in the 21st Century, published by the University of Texas at Austin's Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs. In 2007, Professor Getman's first novel, Strike!, was published by Plain View Press.
Professor Getman completed his undergraduate education at City College of New York. He earned his LL.B and LL.M degrees at Harvard Law School.
