College of Law Practice Management to Hold 2013 Futures Conference at IIT Chicago-Kent October 4 and 5

Program adopts TED talk format

The College of Law Practice Management (COLPM) will hold is 2013 Futures Conference October 4 and 5 at IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law, 565 West Adams Street (between Clinton and Jefferson streets), in Chicago.

Stephen Mayson, director and professor of strategy at Legal Services Institute in London, will deliver the opening plenary address "The Future of Law: Who Will Perform It? Who Will Regulate It?" For more than 25 years, Professor Mayson has advised law firms around the world on issues of strategy, economics, ownership and valuation. He has a particular interest in the reconfiguration of the legal world being driven by competition and the Legal Services Act 2007, while maintaining a firm belief in the need for professional ethics and integrity in business.

This year's conference will adapt the highly interactive format popularized by TED conferences. (TED events are the nonprofit Sapling Foundation's "ideas worth sharing" programs with initially focused on the technology, entertainment and design industries.)

The conference's TED-like legal industry discussions include:

  • The Market for Legal Services in the Future (from the Buyers' Point of View) by Ann Lee Gibson, Ph.D., Ann Lee Gibson Consulting
  • Innovation in the Law Firm by Jordan Furlong, Partner Edge International and Senior Consultant, Stem Legal Web Enterprises
  • The Future of U.S. Law Schools by William Henderson, Professor, Indiana University Maurer School of Law and Director, Center on the Global Legal Profession

Each speaker will set the stage with a 15-minute provocation. Session attendees will be assigned to breakout groups for a facilitated discussion to react to, analyze, and explore the provocation before making recommendations for action. The facilitators will report the findings and observations to the full audience. A compilation of the breakout results will be available on the College of Law Practice Management's website after the Futures Conference.

A panel on "Justice, Lawyering and Legal Education in the Digital Age" will be moderated by IIT Chicago-Kent professor and current COLPM president Ronald W. Staudt. The presentation will include a discussion of the development of automated law practice clinics using A2J Author7 software.

Registration for COLPM fellows, IIT Chicago-Kent faculty and alumni is $495, $595 for non-fellows. Registration is also discounted to $495 for other legal industry association members such as the American Bar Association, Association of Legal Administrators, International Legal Technology Association, and Legal Marketing Association. The program is eligible for 7.5 hours of MCLE credit. For more information, please visit the 2013 Futures Conference website.
