Gershom Gorenberg to discuss "The Crisis of Israeli Democracy" at IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law October 16

Gershom Gorenberg, historian, author, blogger and senior correspondent for The American Prospect, will speak at IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law on October 16 at 4 p.m. Gorenberg will address the topic "How It Broke, How to Fix It: The Crisis of Israeli Democracy and What to Do About It." The program, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the law school's Judge Abraham Lincoln Marovitz Courtroom, 565 West Adams Street (between Clinton and Jefferson streets) in Chicago.

Gershom Gorenberg's journalistic and research interests focus on the intersection of politics and religion and on Middle East politics. Gorenberg is the author of The Unmaking of Israel (Harper Collins 2011),  which grew out of his 25 years of investigative reporting and historical research on Israel's politics and policies. The book examines how the balance of power in Israel has shifted toward extremism, threatening the prospects for peace and democracy as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict intensifies. Gorenberg is the author of The Accidental Empire: Israel and the Birth of the Settlements, 1967–1977 (Free Press 2000), and of The End of Days: Fundamentalism and the Struggle for the Temple Mount (Oxford University Press 2002). He is a co-author of Shalom, Friend: The Life and Legacy of Yitzhak Rabin (Newmarket Press 1996), which won the National Jewish Book Award.

Gorenberg has worked as an associate editor of The Jerusalem Report. His work has appeared in The Atlantic Monthly, The New York Times Magazine, The New Republic, Mother Jones and in Hebrew in Haaretz. He is a frequent commentator for broadcast media on Middle East affairs and on religion. Gorenberg currently is a blogger on SouthJerusalem.com.
