IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law to participate in the Lefkowitz Moot Court Midwest regional competition
Amy Harvey and Mary Katherine Schweihs, third-year students at IIT Chicago-Kent, will represent the law school in the 22nd annual Saul Lefkowitz Moot Court Midwest regional competition on February 9 in Chicago. IIT Chicago-Kent will compete against teams from 13 states in the region. Awards will be presented in the regional competition to the first-, second- and third-place teams, for the best brief, and to the best oral advocate.
The top two teams in the Midwest tournament will join the top two teams from three other regions in the national finals to be held March 16 at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C.
Established in 1990 by the International Trademark Association, the competition is named for the late Saul Lefkowitz to honor his contributions to the development of trademark law and to the education of the trademark bar. Mr. Lefkowitz served as chairman of the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The competition is designed to introduce law students to important issues arising in U.S. trademark and unfair competition law in a courtroom setting. Approximate 80 law school teams participate in the annual tournament.
Team member Amy Harvey completed her undergraduate education in visual and critical studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Teammate Mary Katherine Schweihs earned a bachelor of arts degree from the Program of Liberal Studies at the University of Notre Dame. The team is coached by IIT Chicago-Kent Professor Mickie A. Piatt, deputy director of the Program in Intellectual Property Law, and adjunct professor Richard W. Renner.
