IIT Chicago-Kent Hosts Wednesday Afternoon Gallery Talks on “The Art of Influence: Breaking Criminal Traditions” Exhibit
IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law is hosting a series of Wednesday afternoon gallery talks during the month of November in conjunction with The Art of Influence: Breaking Criminal Traditions exhibit on display at the law school, 565 West Adams Street (between Clinton and Jefferson streets), in Chicago. The weekly discussions, which are free and open to the public, will be held from noon to 1 p.m.
The Art of Influence: Breaking Criminal Traditions sheds light on ongoing ancient rituals that kill or maim millions each year, yet aren't considered crimes. The exhibit is not about gender, culture or religion-bashing. Rather, it is an exploration of human rights, a dialogue to raise consciousness as a first step toward preventing the continuation of these horrifying acts," says Cheryl Jefferson, executive producer of the exhibit and leader of the weekly talks.
"The unique setting in one of Chicago's premier law schools puts the shadowy topics of honor killing, child marriage, acid violence, and more, directly in front of current and future legal influencers who can help create change and does so through the accessible medium of art," continues Jefferson.
Each gallery talk will explore the use of art and culture as strategic tools for creating social and legal change and feature art from the display as the starting point for each conversation. Periodically, guest experts will attend. Topics of upcoming talks include:
- November 13: "A Beautiful House Must Have a Beautiful Door," a discussion of artistic statements in the exhibit on female genital mutilation and how they can be used to move social change forward
- November 20: "Honor Roll," a look at the palette of honor killing in the United States and abroad
- November 27: "Watering Someone Else's Garden," an examination of portraits of child brides—in fact and in art
Founded in 1888, IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law is the law school of Illinois Institute of Technology, a private, Ph.D.-granting institution with programs in engineering, psychology, architecture, business, design and law.
