IIT Chicago-Kent to participate in National Civil Trial Competition
Emily Aleisa '13, Justin Haber '13, Kate Kosartes '14 and Jordan Lebovitz '13 will represent IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law in the National Civil Trial Competition (NCTC), which will be held November 16 to18 at Loyola University Law School in Los Angeles.
Established in 2002 by Loyola University Law School professor Susan Poehls, the NCTC is an invitational tournament that gives students an opportunity to develop and display their skills as successful civil litigators. The competition is co-sponsored by Loyola University Law School and the law firms of Greene Broillet & Wheeler LLP and Manatt, Phelps & Phillips.
IIT Chicago-Kent is one of sixteen law schools invited to participate in the tournament. Teams will be required to conduct opening statements, conduct direct- and cross-examination of witnesses, and make closing arguments as well as argue objections based on the Federal Rules of Evidence.
Team member Emily Aleisa is a third-year student who graduated cum laude from the University of West Florida with a degree in communications. Teammate Justin Haber, also a third-year student, earned degrees in creative writing and business administration from Emory University. Teammate Kate Kosartes, a second-year student, earned undergraduate degrees in political science and geoscience from the University of Iowa. Teammate Jordan Lebovitz graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in political science. (Lebovitz was a member of the IIT Chicago-Kent team that won the National Ethics Trial Competition earlier this year.)
IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law is the law school of Illinois Institute of Technology, a private, Ph.D.-granting institution with programs in engineering, psychology, architecture, business, design and law. IIT Chicago-Kent's trial advocacy teams have won numerous individual student honors and regional and national competitions. U.S. News & World Report this year ranked IIT Chicago-Kent's trial advocacy program third in the country. IIT Chicago-Kent won National Trial Competition championships in 1988, 2007 and 2008.
