Judge Ruben Castillo and Stephen Patton to discuss the "State of the Court and the State of the City"
The Honorable Ruben Castillo, chief judge of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, and Stephen Patton, corporation counsel for the city of Chicago, will each deliver their thoughts on the current state of their respective institutions March 25 at IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law. The program, "State of the Court and the State of the City," will begin at 4:30 p.m. in the law school's Governor Richard B. Ogilvie Auditorium, 565 West Adams Street (between Clinton and Jefferson streets) in Chicago.
The program is co-sponsored by the Chicago Chapter of the Federal Bar Association (FBA) and the newly formed IIT Chicago-Kent FBA student chapter. Judge Ruben Castillo was nominated to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois in 1994 by President Bill Clinton and was named chief judge of the court in July 2013. Prior to his elevation to the federal bench, Judge Castillo was a partner at Kirkland & Ellis. He has also worked in the U.S. Attorney's Office, as director and regional counsel for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF), and as an attorney at Jenner & Block. Judge Castillo is a graduate of Loyola University Chicago and Northwestern University School of Law.
Stephen Patton was appointed the city of Chicago's corporation counsel in May 2011 by Mayor Rahm Emanuel. He serves as senior legal adviser to the mayor and supervises the city's 450-person Law Department. Prior to his appointment as corporation counsel, Patton spent 33 years at Kirkland & Ellis. Patton completed his undergraduate education at Indiana University and received his law degree from Georgetown University.
Founded in 1888, IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law is the law school of Illinois Institute of Technology, a private, Ph.D.-granting institution with programs in engineering, psychology, architecture, business, design and law.
