Pauline T. Kim will deliver the 2011 Kenneth M. Piper Lecture
Pauline T. Kim, Charles Nagel Professor of Law at Washington University School of Law in St. Louis, will deliver IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law's 33rd annual Kenneth M. Piper Lecture, addressing the topic "Privacy, Loyalty and Free Speech: Pushing the Boundaries of the Modern Employment Relationship." The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be held April 5 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Chicago-Kent's Gov. Richard B. Ogilvie Auditorium, 565 West Adams St. (between Clinton and Jefferson streets) in Chicago.
Professor Kim's presentation will focus on the tensions between maintaining employees' free speech and privacy rights and employers' legitimate business interests and the need to manage their workplaces. Professor Kim will also examine how technological advances and changes in the nature and organization of work have combined to blur the boundaries between employees' work and personal lives.
Pauline T. Kim graduated summa cum laude from Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges and was a Henry Fellow at New College, Oxford University. Professor Kim earned her J.D. magna cum laude from Harvard Law School. A faculty member at Washington University School of Law since 1994, she teaches courses in employment law and civil procedure and a seminar on courts and judicial decision-making. Professor Kim's scholarship focuses on employment law, workplace privacy, litigation and courts, and judicial decision-making. She is affiliated with the Center for Empirical Research in the Law and is a member of the advisory council of the Center for the Interdisciplinary Study of Work and Social Capital at Washington University.
Two leading experts will comment on Professor Kim's remarks from employee and management perspectives. Lisa R. Callaway is vice president and general counsel of the Management Association of Illinois. In that capacity, Callaway assists employers in collective bargaining, arbitration, employment and nonprofit employers, and provides advice and counsel to the Management Association of Illinois. Arnold H. Pedowitz is a founding member of Pedowitz & Meister, LLP, in New York City and a member of the ABA Section of Labor and Employment Law's governing council.

The annual Kenneth M. Piper Lecture is sponsored by Chicago-Kent College of Law's Institute for Law and the Workplace. It is presented by the Kenneth M. Piper Endowment, which was established by a gift from Mrs. Kenneth M. Piper in memory of her husband. Mr. Piper was a distinguished executive with Motorola, Inc., and Bausch & Lomb, Inc., who made important contributions in human resources and labor relations for more than two decades.
