Two teams will represent IIT Chicago-Kent in the Evan A. Evans Constitutional Law Moot Court Competition
IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law will be represented by two teams in the 2013 Evan A. Evans Constitutional Law Moot Court Competition March 15 to 17 at the University of Wisconsin Law School in Madison.
Law school teams from many of the top moot court programs in the country will participate in the tournament, which is named for Judge Evan A. Evans, an 1899 graduate of the University of Wisconsin Law School who served on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit from 1916 to 1948. During his years of private practice, Judge Evans was noted for both his brief-writing and his outstanding oral advocacy skills.
Jake Berger '14 and Colleen Nickel '14 are on one team. The second team comprises Jack Marshall '13 and Zeke Katz '14.
The students will argue State of New Haven v. James Morinth, a hypothetical criminal case involving a defendant charged with driving under the influence and refusing to give a DNA sample, in accordance with state law.
Team member Jake Berger is a second-year student who majored in political science and international studies at the University of Wisconsin. Teammate Colleen Nickel, also a second-year student, graduated from Michigan State University with a double major in political science and history.
Team member Jack Marshall is a third-year student who graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a double major in English and political science. Teammate Zeke Katz, a second-year student, majored in philosophy and religion at Colgate University.
IIT Chicago-Kent won the overall competition in 2008 and 2009. In 2009, IIT Chicago-Kent also won awards for the best respondent's and petitioner's briefs.
Founded in 1888, IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law is celebrating "125 years of distinctive legal education." IIT Chicago-Kent is the law school of Illinois Institute of Technology, a private, Ph.D.-granting institution with programs in engineering, psychology, architecture, business, design and law. IIT Chicago-Kent is the only law school ever to win the National Trial Competition and the National Moot Court Competition in the same year (2008), and the first school in more than 30 years to win the National Moot Court Competition in two consecutive years (2008 and 2009).
