UC-Irvine Law Dean Erwin Chemerinsky is IIT Chicago-Kent's 2013 Centennial Visitor
"Has the Supreme Court Lost Faith in the Courts?" is the topic of the October 7 lecture
University of California Irvine School of Law Dean Erwin Chemerinsky has been named IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law's 2013 Centennial Visitor. Dean Chemerinsky will deliver the 2013 Centennial Lecture, "Has the Supreme Court Lost Faith in the Courts?," at 3 p.m. on October 7 in the Governor Richard B. Ogilvie Auditorium at the law school at 565 West Adams Street (between Clinton and Jefferson streets) in Chicago. The lecture is free and open to the public, but reservations are requested. Erwin Chemerinsky is the founding Dean and Distinguished Professor of Law and the Raymond Pryke Professor of First Amendment Law at the University of California, Irvine School of Law. He also holds a joint appointment in the university's political science department.
Dean Chemerinsky joined the University of California Irvine School of Law in 2009. He previously taught at Duke Law School for four years, where he won the 2006 Duke University Scholar-Teacher of the Year Award. Prior to that, Dean Chemerinsky taught for 21 years at the University of Southern California School of Law and served for four years as director of the Center for Communications Law and Policy. He has also taught at UCLA School of Law and DePaul University College of Law.
Dean Chemerinsky's areas of expertise are constitutional law, federal practice, civil rights and civil liberties, and appellate litigation. He is the author of seven books, most recently, The Conservative Assault on the Constitution (October 2010, Simon & Schuster), and nearly 200 articles in top law reviews. Dean Chemerinsky frequently argues cases before the nation's highest courts, and serves as a commentator on legal issues for national and local media.
Dean Chemerinsky earned his law degree from Harvard Law School and completed his undergraduate education in communications at Northwestern University.
Founded in 1888, IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law is celebrating "125 years of distinctive legal education." IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law is the law school of Illinois Institute of Technology, a private, Ph.D.-granting institution with programs in engineering, psychology, architecture, business, design and law. The Centennial Visitor lecture series was inaugurated in fall 1987 as part of a yearlong celebration to mark the founding of Chicago College of Law, forerunner of IIT Chicago-Kent, in 1888. Previous lecturers have included the Honorable Harry T. Edwards of the U.S. Court of Appeals for District of Columbia Circuit, the Honorable Stephen M. Schwebel of the International Court of Justice in The Hague, Harvard Law School Dean Martha Minow, and economist Jagdish Bhagwati.
