Associate Dean Sowle's Announcements, May 22 - May 26, 2023

Summer 2023 Schedule and Registration.

•General Information. Please go to the Summer 2023 Quick Guide for the Summer 2023 schedule of classes and other information about the Summer term, including the add/drop period, classroom assignments, initial reading assignments, pass/fail registration, and applying for graduation.

•U-Passes for Summer Term. [From Dean Abhijeet:] Chicago-Kent is a participant in the Chicago Transit Authority's U-Pass program. All full-time J.D. students (determined by your official division status, not by the number of credit hours you take in a particular term) who register for any Summer credits will be enrolled in the Summer U-Pass program, unless you opt out (see below). A fee of $72 for the Summer term will be billed to your student account. U-Passes will be activated to work from Monday, May 22 (the first day of Summer class) through Wednesday, July 19 (the end of the exam period for most summer classes). Due to restrictions imposed by the CTA, the program is not currently available to evening students or part-time day students. For more details, visit the CTA's U-Pass web site.

Note to Summer-start students: We will notify you when we have received your U-Pass Ventra cards. You will use this card until you graduate. Please note that the cards will only be active through July 19, even though your class continues beyond that date. The cards require activation; instructions will be provided when you pick up your card. You will also be able to use the card during breaks from school by adding money to the card.

Opting Out: Full-time students may choose to opt out of the U-Pass program for the Summer term by completing the  Summer 2023 U-Pass Opt Out form by May 29, 2023. The form must be completed by this deadline to ensure your student account will not be billed the U-Pass fee.

Fall 2023 Schedule and Registration. The Fall 2022 schedule, registration instructions, and other information about the Fall term are available on the Fall 2023 Quick Guide page. Please note: There have been some changes and additions to the schedule (summarized at the top of the Quick Guide page). The initial registration period will run from Thursday, May 25, 9:00 am through Tuesday, May 30, 9:00 pm

Notices to Graduating Seniors. If you are a May 2023 graduate, please read the information below about your Kent email and network accounts, and your locker. If you have any questions, please let me know.

•Network and Print Accounts. Your network account will be deactivated on Monday, July 31 (the first Monday after the July bar exam). Your free printing quota was reset to zero on Monday, May 15 (the first Monday after Commencement).

•Email Accounts. Your Kent email account is for life. You can continue to use your Chicago-Kent email as long as you choose to do so. Please click here for information about how to access your email account after your network access is deactivated (scroll down to the Email section).

•ID Cards and Library Access. Kent student ID cards will remain active until Monday, July 31 (the first Monday after the July bar exam), and Kent graduates may use the Library for bar exam studying.

•Clearing Out Lockers. Please clear your lockers out no later than Monday, July 31 (the first Monday after the July bar exam). Anything left in lockers after that date will be removed. If you are unable to clear your locker out by that date, please contact me to make arrangements for your locker contents to be set aside for you. Please note: This applies only to graduating students. If you are not graduating, you do not need to clear your locker out; you will keep your current locker until you graduate.

•Student Health Insurance. If you have student health insurance through IIT, your coverage will end on August 9, 2023.

•Fitness Center. Spring graduates will continue to have access to the Fitness Center until Monday, July 31 (the first Monday after the July bar exam).

Dean's Certification Form for Illinois Bar.  We will mail a Dean's Certification form to the Illinois bar examiners for every graduating student after final grades for the Spring semester are received and processed and we can confirm completion of all graduation requirements. We compile the list of graduating students from the list of those who submitted Applications for Graduation listing Spring 2023 as their final semester. Important note: University policy does not allow the certification of any student to the bar examiners if the student has an outstanding balance owed to the school.

Bar Forms for Other States.  If you plan to take a bar exam outside of Illinois, you should provide me (at ssowle@kentlaw.iit.edu) with the appropriate form(s) for the Law School to complete as soon as possible.

Counseling Services. This is a reminder that the university provides counseling services free of charge for students. Click here for details on the available resources, including individual counseling through Skylight Counseling Services. In addition to resources available through the university, the Lawyers Assistance Program also provides assistance to law students. LAP provides free and confidential assistance to members of the Illinois legal communitnts, and can help you with issues of addiction, stress, anxiety, depression, focusing, worries about the character and fitness process, and having a successful first-year transition. Click here for more information about LAP and the services it provides.
