IIT Chicago-Kent faculty perspectives on the U.S. Supreme Court decision on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act
Professor Carolyn Shapiro named "Appellate Lawyer of the Week" by National Law Journal
Professor Carolyn Shapiro, director of IIT Chicago-Kent's Institute on the Supreme Court of the United States (ISCOTUS), has been designated "Appellate Lawyer of the Week" by the National Law Journal.
"Shapiro has started a center at her school that aims to demystify the Court's operating procedures and provide more resources about the institution to lawyers and the public at large," notes the Journal in an online profile published July 2 on Law.com.
The profile continues: "At the Institute on the Supreme Court of the United Stares, Shapiro wants to have 'honest conversation' about the Court's role in society. 'There was a real hunger for information,' said Shapiro, the center's director. 'Information that isn't being pushed by somebody for his or her own purposes.'"
Professor Shapiro joined IIT Chicago-Kent's faculty in 2003. She is a former clerk for Justice Stephen Breyer of the U.S. Supreme Court and Judge Richard Posner of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.
Founded last year, the Institute on the Supreme Court fosters academic research, hosts public events relating to the work of the court, and houses the Oyez Project (www.oyez.org), a vast multimedia resource devoted to the Supreme Court and its work.

Professor Nahmod also commented on the Affordable Care Act's penalties under taxing power of Congress to ABC7 Chicago and First Business. He also spoke to First Business about the Republicans' vow to repeal the Affordable Care Act.
On the eve of the Supreme Court's decision, Professor Carolyn Shapiro, director of the Institute on the Supreme Court of the United States and a former clerk for Justice Breyer, appeared on WTTW's "Chicago Tonight" to discuss legal issues in the Affordable Care Act cases as well as the workings and dynamics of the Court.
