IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law Institute on the Supreme Court of the United States Names First Appellate Lawyer-In-Residence

Illinois Solicitor General Michael A. Scodro has been named the first Appellate Lawyer-in-Residence at IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law's Institute on the Supreme Court of the United States (ISCOTUS). Scodro will be introduced on November 11 at the semi-final round of the Ilana Diamond Rovner Appellate Advocacy Competition at the law school, 565 West Adams Street (between Clinton and Jefferson streets) in Chicago.

Scodro will serve as the presiding judge of the round, which begins at 3:30 p.m. in the law school's Abraham Lincoln Marovitz Courtroom. Following the competition, students will be able to speak with Scodro at an informal reception.

During the winter 2014 semester of his residency, Scodro will discuss oral and written advocacy with first-year students and conduct a discussion on oral advocacy with Moot Court Honor Society students.

"I could not be more thrilled to have Mike Scodro join us as our inaugural ISCOTUS Appellate Lawyer- in-Residence," said IIT Chicago-Kent Dean Harold J. Krent. "Mike is an experienced appellate lawyer, who most recently argued in front of the United States Supreme Court only last month, and he is a gifted teacher and speaker. We are fortunate that he is willing to share his experience and knowledge with Chicago-Kent's students."

Michael Scodro was appointed to the position of Illinois Solicitor General by Attorney General Lisa Madigan in 2007. As Illinois Solicitor General, Scodro overees the attorney general's civil and criminal appellate divisions in litigation before state and federal courts. From 2004 to 2006, when he was appointed as Deputy Solicitor General, Scodro served on the faculty of IIT Chicago-Kent. Prior to that, he spent several years as part of Mayer Brown LLP's appellate group.

Scodro is a graduate of Dartmouth College and Yale Law School, where he served as an executive editor of the Yale Law Journal and an articles editor of the Yale Journal of International Law. He is a former clerk for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and Judge José A. Cabranes of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

Scodro serves as secretary of the Appellate Lawyers Association, was elected to membership in the American Law Institute, and chairs the Committee on the Administration of Justice of the Seventh Circuit Bar Association.
