IIT Chicago-Kent Professor Jerry Goldman receives a 2012 Fastcase 50 award
Jerry Goldman, research professor of law and director of the Oyez Project at IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law, has been named to receive a 2012 Fastcase 50 award. Fastcase, a legal research service based in Washington, D.C., established the awards in 2011 to showcase "the fifty most interesting, provocative, and courageous leaders in the world of law, scholarship, and legal technology." The recipients were honored during the American Association of Law Libraries annual meeting July 21–24 in Boston, Mass.
Professor Goldman is founder and director of the Oyez Project, a multimedia archive devoted to the Supreme Court of the United States and its work. The website, www.oyez.org, which has thousands of visitors daily, provides immediate access to nearly 10,000 hours of courtroom audio recorded since 1955. Under his direction, the project created Oyez Today, a smartphone app for iPhone, iPad and Android platforms. This spring, the Oyez Project updated its comprehensive multimedia guide on issues related to the unprecedented three days of oral arguments on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act cases and made transcripts, oral arguments and videos available to a wider audience.
Prior to joining IIT Chicago-Kent in 2011, Professor Goldman spent 36 years as a member of Northwestern University's political science faculty. He has also served as a research associate at the Federal Judicial Center.
Professor Goldman completed his undergraduate education at Brooklyn College and earned his doctorate in political science from Johns Hopkins University.
Professor Goldman has received numerous awards, including several software awards from the American Political Science Association (APSA). In 2005, he was a co-recipient of APSA's Best Instructional Website Award for IDEAlog, an application to analyze political values. Professor Goldman is also a recipient of the 1997 EDUCOM Medal and the 1998 Silver Gavel Award of the American Bar Association for improving public understanding of law.
Professor Goldman is a co-author of The Challenge of Democracy: American Government in Global Politics (Wadsworth), a best selling textbook on American government that has been revised, reprinted and translated numerous times since it was first published in 1987. In addition to numerous articles, monographs and book reviews, Professor Goldman has published A Good Quarrel (University of Michigan Press) (edited with T. Johnson); Ineffective Justice: Evaluating the Preappeal Conference (Sage); and To Enact a Law: Congress and Campaign Financing (Praeger) (with R. Peabody et al.).
