Greg Wyler '96, founder and executive chairman of OneWeb, will deliver the keynote address at Chicago-Kent College of Law's 2017 Commencement on Sunday, May 14. The ceremony will begin at 2:30 p.m. at the UIC Forum, 725 W. Roosevelt Rd., in Chicago.
Mr. Wyler will be joined by two student speakers. Valedictorian Symone Shinton will deliver the J.D. Mr. Wyler founded OneWeb in 2012 with a goal of enabling Internet access for everyone and connecting every unconnected school in the world by 2022. He has spent much of his time in emerging markets working hands-on with technology development and deployment. In 2007, he founded O3b Networks Ltd., later acquired by SES Corporation, which raised approximately $1.3 billion to design and build a satellite constellation to provide fiber-quality backhaul for telecom operators in the most remote markets around the world. Before that, Mr. Wyler spent three years developing telecommunications in Africa for very rural locations. In the 1990s, Mr. Wyler founded a semiconductor-cooling technology company that provided thermal solutions to top PC manufacturers such as Dell and Hewlett Packard and eventually to gaming consoles such as the Xbox. In 2015, Mr. Wyler received the Arthur C. Clarke Award for his "pioneering new approaches to satellite communications."
